WHAT IS ERGONOMICS?

The term ergonomics come from the Greek words "ergo" meaning work and "nomos" meaning law. Today, the term is used to describe the science of" designing the job to fit the worker and not to force the worker to fit the job".

Another definition of the term ergonomics is the discipline that involves the arranging of the environment to fit the person in it.

Ergonomics concerns the optimum design of products , jobs and systems in relation to human beings. It has the central bearing whenever products are designed. It determines for instance if it is easier for us to get into a bus , a building , drive a car and many other things.

In spite of many designers being a ware of this, there has been claims that designers are overlooking this and hence design systems and appliances which have flaws and instead have concentrated with technology.

Ergonomics will have a mission if engineers and designers are a ware of their users and make organisation take greater of their " human component".

Many organization like CDC's Office of Safety and Health have identified that most repetitive motion injuries as a factor in employee injuries.

Therefore following ergonomic principles will reduce this problems. Therefore the original purpose of ergonomics was to enhance the efficiency and well being of the work force.

Therefore all organizations are supposed to observe the ergonomic principles for the safe and efficient work force which in turn will result in high turnovers.
