ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF MANUAL AND AUTOMATED SAFETY

The following are the advantages and disadvantages of automated safety:

Advantages of automated safety

a) Speed - automated systems can process information much more faster than human beings. An automated system's response is faster and hence prevents accidents and other hazards.

b) Repetition - an automated system can do the same job over and over again without getting tired and bored and hence it is real time than human beings who can get bored or tired due to moving up and down and hence get tired and may fail to acomplish his duties properly.

c) Accuracy - automated systems are accurate and follow precise instructions without error.

d) Safety - automated systems can be used in places where human beings are unsafe to work in like nuclear power plants and space.

e) Adaptability -automated systems can be programmed to carry out different tasks. For instance an automated fire extinguisher systems can be programed also to switch off power supply.

Disadvantages of automated safety systems

a) high capital expenditure -the amount of money required to invest in an automated system can be millions of shillings which is expensive to smaller companies.

b) Worker lay off - automated systems take the place of workers who were working to maintain safety.

c) Higher level of maintanance - automated safety systems require a higher level of maintenance than manually operated machines

Advantages of manual safety

a) Flexibility - the manual safety system is flexible unlike the automated which has to take the prescribed course without external interference.

b) Economical - the cost of establishing a manual safety system is cheaper than an automated system hence it is economical to operate and maintain.

c) Maintains workers -the manual satety does not replace workers hence maintain the workers and their work stations.

Disadvantages of manual safety

a) speed - the response speed of the manual system is slow compared to the automated system and hence more accidents are prone to happen than in automated system.

b) Inaccurate - the manual system is inaccurate as aresult of not following the instructions to details.

c) Inadaptability - the manual safety sytem can not be programed to do many tasks a part from the one it is prescribed to carry out and therefore not economical to use.

d) Exposure to dangerous enviroments - manual safety system exposes human beings to dangerous enviroments. For instance the nuclear power plant.
