POPULAR TYPES OF SERVERS

There are many different types of servers based on the type service that they offer. Some of them include the following;

a) Application servers

These type of servers are sometimes called the middleware and links the database servers and the end user. Middleware is a software which connects two different separate application. This allows the users to request data from the database using the web browser and it enables the web server to return dynamic web pages basing on the user's request.

b) Audio and Video servers

These type of servers enable multimedia streaming of data. Streaming is a technique for transferring data such that it can be processed as a stead and continous stream.
With streaming, the client browser or plug in can start displaying the data before the entire file is
transmitted.

c) Chat servers

These type of servers allow alarge number of people to exchange information in an enviroment similar to the Internet newsgroups that offer real time discussion capabilities. Real time means occuring immediately.

d) Fax servers

These type of servers give an organisation an ideal solution to reducing the incoming and outgoing telephone resources but that need to fax the actual document.

e) File Transfer Protocol Servers

These types of servers make it possible the transfer of files securely between computers while providing file security and organization as well as transfer control

f) Groupware servers
This is a software designed to enable users to collaborate regardless of location through the internet or a corporate intranet and to work together through a virtual atmosphere.


g) News servers

This act as a distribution and delivery source for thousands of public news groups which is accessible through the USENET news network. News net is a worldwide bulletin board system that can be accessed through the internet or through many online services.

h) Proxy servers

This type of server is in between the web browser and an external server and it serves the purpose of filtering requests , improve performance and share connections.

i) Telnet servers

Telnet servers allow an individual to access to log into the host computer and perform tasks as if they are working on the romote computer itself.

j) Web servers

This serves the static content to the web browser by loading a file from a hard disk and serving it a cross the network to a user's web browser.
